Due to the visual divide of the elevated freeway, the Grove-Shafter Freeway (State Route 24) is generally considered to be the modern neighborhood's western bound. Historically, the northern bound has been thought to end at Alcatraz Avenue and Shattuck (at the South Berkeley border), and the southern bound has been thought to end at either 36th or 40th Street.
